Simulation Faculty Development

Faculty development is an area that is very close to my heart. Part of the movtivation is to get more people to join the teaching team. Simulation education is known to be labour intensive. This is very true as I recall my first "fearless" year in the National University Hospital executing the Rapid Escalation clinical simulation drill. Along with 4 other nurse educators, we brace ourselves with > 400 simulation hours per year . It was a fun year and we reaped good harvest of >80% participation from the ground staff. As we progress, we could no longer provide the undivided attention and henced, more clinical instructors (about 70) were trained to be simulation educators within the unit.

Clinical instructors (CIs) are our registered nurses working in the wards. They are appointed clinical facilitators for undergraduate students and junior staff. Clinical instructors are very important resources in bridging learning towards direct job application. Educators often co-facilitate clinical simulation with the CIs as they know the learning needs of their staff members and they are resourceful to manage the training logistics in the ward while education department brings up the high-technology manikin.

The SEHE course is a faculty course tailored for healthcare educators based in Singapore. It is offered by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare Singapore (SSHS). The 3-days programme is jointly developed by 5 course directors with background in Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics and Nursing. I am one of the course directors contributing from the nursing perspective.

The course is into its 3rd run by April 2017. It is very well received and has received delegates from Thailand.

The Asia region is developing more faculty and clinical faculty in adopting simulation as a teaching tool. I have the privilege to conduct faculty courses for :

- Shanghai Eastern Hospital, Shanghai, China

- Zhejiang Hospital, Hangzhou, China

- Nantong University, Nanjing, China

- Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai, China

- Second Xiangya Hospital, Changsha, China

- Siriraj Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand

- Ciptomangunkusumo Hospital, Jarkata, Indonesia

- Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Brunei

- Berkeley HealthEDU, New Delhi, India

- Cheongam College of Nursing, South Korea

- Taylor’s University, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Faculty courses are also delivered through conference workshops or pre-conference workshops. These are shorter versions of faculty courses that provides essential key messages toolkit for novice faculty.
